Christmas Things to Do with Kids in Scotland: 10 Magical Days Out for 2026

Nov 03, 2026Alexandra Borthwick

With Christmas coming up, you want to get out and do something really magical with the children. But it has to be said, the experiences you end up paying for often fall short. We've all been to the one that felt a little overpriced, a little shabby and, frankly, a little depressing.

Not these. I've pulled together Christmas experiences for kids in Scotland that are genuinely worth going out of your way for. Most need booking well ahead, so it's worth getting organised now.

1. Christmas at the Botanics, Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh lights up after dark from 19 November to 30 December 2026, and this year marks the trail's tenth anniversary. Favourites like the Christmas Cathedral and the Fire Garden are back. There are relaxed sessions for families who'd prefer a calmer visit. Weekend and early evening slots sell out first. Book at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

2. Giant Lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo

Hundreds of handmade lanterns fill the zoo after dark from 13 November 2026 to 21 February 2027. It runs long after Christmas, so it's a good one for January too. There are quiet sessions for little ones who find crowds too much. Book at Edinburgh Zoo.

3. Scottish Ballet's Cinders!, Edinburgh and Glasgow

For a proper Christmas treat, Scottish Ballet's playful take on Cinderella has Prokofiev's music played live by its own orchestra. It's at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh from 11 to 24 December, and at the Theatre Royal Glasgow from 30 December to 16 January, which makes it perfect for the days between Christmas and New Year. Book the Glasgow dates.

4. Santa and the Cairngorm reindeer

Scotland has its own reindeer. The Cairngorm herd was brought here from Sweden in 1952 and is the only free-ranging herd in Britain. In the run-up to Christmas, Santa visits Cairngorm Mountain with some of the reindeer, and you can ride the mountain railway while you're there. Places sold out quickly last year, so watch for this year's dates. Find out more at Cairngorm Mountain.

5. A Santa weekend in Aviemore

If you'd like to make a weekend of it, Macdonald Aviemore Resort runs Santa weekends in December. Children visit Santa in his woodland grotto and the elves' workshop, then meet the real Cairngorm reindeer.

6. Santa's Woodland Experience, Stirlingshire

This is the antidote to the rushed grotto queue. Families take a tractor ride through woodland strung with fairy lights, then children choose a present in a warm cabin and have a proper chat with Santa, at their own pace.

7. Santa steam trains at Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway

Climb aboard a festively decorated heritage train for a steam journey to the "North Pole". You can book your own private compartment, Santa meets every family on board, and there are seasonal refreshments for everyone. Find out more.

8. Royal Deeside Railway Santa Steam Train

For families in the north-east, a short steam train ride through the Deeside countryside, with festive singing on board, ends with a visit to Santa's grotto at Milton of Crathes.

9. Christmas at New Lanark

The World Heritage village in South Lanarkshire puts on a full festive day out on weekends from 28 November to 13 December. Children meet Santa in his grotto and get a soft toy, and there's a pantomime and a festive ride. Find out more.

10. The Inverurie Cairngorm Reindeer Parade

Free and properly magical: Santa's reindeer and sleigh parade through Inverurie town centre on Saturday 12 December 2026 at 2.30pm. Afterwards you can see the reindeer up close and visit Santa's grotto. Find out more.
