Amanda Wells x Hanem Eleanor Petal Lampshade

I loved visiting Amanda Wells in her East Lothian studio and seeing how she works – whether it's rattan, silk, linen, tassels or a velvet trim. She's a true creative with a really interesting background: she's a descendant of Whytock & Reid, the Edinburgh cabinetmakers and furniture designers that generations of Edinburgh families knew and loved. These petal shades are her latest creation – elegant, with a touch of whimsy.

The Eleanor Petal is a handmade fabric lampshade in a textured mauve and ochre weave, made to order in Amanda's studio. Six petals open out like a flower, and it can hang as a ceiling pendant or sit on a table lamp.

Amanda designed the Petal shade with interior designer Hannah Learmont. Each fabric-covered petal hooks onto an antique-brass-toned frame, so the petals can be taken off and swapped.

The Eleanor fabric

Looped ochre thread runs across a soft mauve base, and when the light is on the texture throws lovely light and shadow onto the walls and ceiling. Amanda named it after a good friend – an artist and entrepreneur who has supported her work and life.

Eleanor is one of four fabrics in the Petal Stories Collection – Anna, Eleanor, Nancy and Naomi – each named after a woman who has inspired Amanda or Hannah.

How the shade is made

Each shade is made up of six separate fabric-covered petals. They clip onto an antique-brass-toned frame and are held in place with small, discreet stoppers, which gives the shade its sculptural, flower-like shape. Because the petals are separate, they can be taken off and rearranged or swapped. The shade can hang as a ceiling pendant or sit on a table lamp.

Handmade to order in Scotland

Each shade is made by hand in Amanda's East Lothian studio, with a lead time of around 3–4 weeks, and is sent to you directly from her.
