House of Cheviot - Made Scotland

House of Cheviot

House of Cheviot is a family-run knitwear company based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, a town long known for its textile tradition. From their workshop there, they produce beautifully made socks and knitwear designed for both town and country - but mainly, I'd say, country.

When I visit the factory, what strikes me immediately is the atmosphere of the place. It’s a warm, busy room full of knitting machines steadily producing long tubes of wool that wriggle out like fat little snakes. There’s something almost Willy Wonka–like about it scottish I could happily spend hours just watching the process unfold.

Their machines knit everything from practical walking socks to beautifully decorative kilt socks and plenty in between. But the real detail to attention happens afterwards. Each sock passes through the hands of around twelve people during the finishing process. They are checked, mended, joined, pressed and carefully finished before leaving the building.

Across the year the team produces around 70,000 pairs of socks, yet each one is still handled by skilled people who know their trade inside out. It’s this combination of traditional expertise and thoughtful design that makes House of Cheviot so impressive. Their socks feel rooted in tradition, but at the same time entirely contemporary - which is exactly why I choose to sell them.
