A Lochside Haven in Dumfries and Galloway
Magical is how we'd describe this wonderful large holiday cottage, Ornockenoch, tucked away at the head of a small loch near Gatehouse of Fleet, in Dumfries & Galloway. It's at the end of a single track road, so it's quiet and free from any passing traffic - particularly great for kids.
The Perfect Holiday House
That top picture is the view from the front door. Scottish holiday cottage - I'm not sure the word 'cottage' is quite right. This place is pretty rambling. From the outside the house has a newish look, but that's because it's just had a facelift in the form of being wrapped in insulation. Inside, it's comfortingly cosy - so rare for a big Scottish country house! And it's very characterful, with fireplaces, shutters, panelling, old butler's sinks, the lot.
This place sleeps 15 and there's bags of space, from a huge kitchen and eating area to a utility room, a boot room, a 'room for your chef or nanny...' Sadly we weren't in that league but it is a useful extra little bedroom just off the kitchen if anyone can't manage the stairs (or likes to be near the fridge?).
Exploring Dumfries and Galloway
When the weather's fine (it was!) the loch makes the perfect place to swim, paddle board, kayak or simply to picnic on the grassy banks. And nearby are all sorts of excursions, from the wonderful sandy beaches at Mossyard to Galloway Forest Park. And further afield you'll find day trips to places like to Wigtown, nicknamed 'Booktown' due to all the book shops and it's famous book festival held every year.
The owner, who lives just up the farm track but is very discreet, can arrange everything from a feast to a private whisky tasting.
Perfect for:
-
Families who want space to sprawl
-
Groups looking for a quiet rural escape
-
Family celebrations like Christmas and Easter
- Walkers as there are miles of open country to walk
I'd highly recommend a few days here for total rest, relaxation and beautiful Scottish landscapes by the bucketload!
