It's that time of year again, Edinburgh Festival time. It's the world's largest arts festival but if you're anything like me, you'll find the sheer number of events make it hard to navigate. If you're looking for some real Scottish culture and to explore the Festival's more sustainable side, read on.

Here are my top 15 Made Scotland suggestions for a really immersive Scottish experience at the 2024 Edinburgh Festival. THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS CRAFT FAIR

This eclectic craft fair showcases a wide range of Scottish produce, including artisanal cheses, handcrafted jewellery and many other unique gifts. It's the perfect place to buy things that are truly Scottish-made (rather than much of the imported tat you find on the Royal Mile).

 

ECO-FRIENDLY ART INSTALLATIONS AT THE EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL

Discover art installations made from recycled and eco-friendly materials scattered around various locations in Edinburgh. Exhibits include "Plastic Beach" by artists Tim Collins and Reiko Goto at the City Art Centre and "Living Lenses" by Patrick Geddes at Inverleith House, exploring sustainable urban living.

 

TRADITIONAL SCOTTISH MUSIC SESSIONS AT THE ROYAL OAK

A cosy classic Edinburgh pub renown for its traditional Scottish music sessions. You can enjoy live performances, featuring fiddles, bagpipes and folk songs giving you a taste of authentic Scottish culture. And a cold beer too!

 

SUSTAINABLE FASHION SHOW AT EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART

This is before the Festival, on 22 July at 7pm but worth a visit if you can. See cutting edge fashion that champions sustainability. It features designs from emerging Scottish fashion designers showcasing innovative and stylish sustainable fashion. It's at the College of Art on Lauriston Place.

 

FARMER'S MARKET ON CASTLE TERRACE

For a truly Scottish experience you need to try a wide range of Scottish produce. And you'll find it here at the farmer's market which is held every Saturday from 9am-2pm. Proper local produce from around Scotland including seasonal vegetables, artisanal breads and handmade cheeses. All under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. 

 

THE GREEN CRAFT FAIR AT OUT OF THE BLUE DRILL HALL

This craft fair is dedicated to showcasing handmade items created from recycled and sustainable materials. Find beautiful eco-friendly crafts ranging from jewellery to homeware, all crafted by local artisans who are very much focused on environmental sustainability.

 

SCOTTISH STORYTELLLING SESSIONS AT THE SCOTTISH STORYTELLING CENTRE

It's not your average visitor attraction but this is a great way to experience Scotland's rich oral tradition. These sessions feature master storytellers who bring to life ancient legends, folk talkes and contemporary stories, offering a great cultural experience for all ages. A great place to take a break from the busy crowds.

 

EDINBURGH FOOD FESTIVAL AT GEORGE SQUARE GARDENS

Part of the Edinburgh Food Festival, this is the place to come if you want to try an array of food stalls. You'll find gourmet street food and artisanal treats, all sourced from Scottish producers. The perfect place to get some good local food and enjoy it outside in the buzz of the festival.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL FILM SCREENINGS AT SUMMERHALL

This great venue by Edinburgh's Meadows hosts a series of environmental film screenings that highlight pressing ecological issues and sustainability. From 20 July to 10 August they'll show lots of thought-provoking documentaries and films that aim to educate and inspire audiences about environmental stewardship.

 

EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL: PLATFORM: 2024 AT CITY ART CENTRE

Discover the latest contemporary Scottish art at Platform 2024. This exhibition at the City Art Centre features innovative works from emerging artists providing fresh perspectives on modern art and culture. Just by Waverley Station so very easy to pop into when you're passing.

 

ZERO WASTE WORKSHOPS AT THE EDINBURGH REMAKERY
