The Edinburgh Festival has so many fantastic things to do for families. From free attractions on street corners to science shows, magic, top comedy and circus, the real challenge is trying to pick what to see.
I mean, every time I start to wade through the huge Festival catalogue I need a lie down, there's so much choice! It's one the biggest celebrations of art and culture on the planet so don't miss it. CHILDREN'S THEATRE SHOWS AT THE PLEASANCE KIDS
The Pleasance Kids programme offers a variety of age-appropriate plays and performances to keep kids on the edge of their seats. From fairy tales for little ones to hilarious plays for the older ones, the shows are interactive, engaging and unforgettable.
PUPPET SHOWS AT THE SCOTTISH STORYTELLING CENTRE
Enjoy charming puppet performances that bring stories to life with colourful characters and imaginative plots. These shows are perfect for sparking creativity and making children laugh. It's a lovely bright, modern venue too.
STORYTELLING SESSIONS AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SCOTLAND
The National Library of Scotland holds wonderful storytelling sessions featuring talented storytellers who weave enchanting tales from Scotland and elsewhere. Great for younger kids and it's free, you just turn up.
INTERACTIVE ART EXHIBITS AT THE EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL
These hands on art installations at the Edinburgh Art Festival are all about encouraging children to explore their creativity. A good way to combine fun with learning.
FAMILY FRIENDLY COMEDY AT THE COMEDY CLUB 4 KIDS
Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups, sketch acts and cabaret stars from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits. It's family friendly without being patronising, top class stuff.

KIDS WORKSHOPS AT DYNAMIC EARTH
Dynamic Earth offers a range of craft and art workshops designed for kids. they're very hands-on sessions which teach new skills like paper-making and inspire creativity. Good, fun interactive learning.
STREET PERFORMERS IN THE ROYAL MILE
A real favourite this. The Royal Mile comes alive during the Edinburgh Festival with jugglers, magicians, acrobats, and of course the sound of the bagpipes too. Kids love the chaos and the spontaneity of all the entertainers in this historic street. And it's totally free - though bring some cash for the amazing performers.
THE GREATEST MAGIC SHOW AT THE MEADOWS
A thrilling circus performance featuring acrobats, daredevil stunts, and comedy acts. This show is designed to entertain the whole family with its dynamic and high-energy routines.
GAME ON AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND
An exhibition that's been touring the world for the past 22 years. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Mario, families will love exploring gaming's rich history and you can play many of the key games produced over the last 50 years.
PARADES AND PROCESSIONS AT THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL CARNIVAL
This is before the Edinburgh Festival starts, it's part of Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and takes place on Sunday 14 July. A vibrant explosion of costumes, music and dancing with a festive atmosphere that kids will love.
MUSIC WORKSHOPS AT THE QUEEN'S HALL
The queen's hall runs music sessions for kdis where they can explore different instruments and rhythms. These workshops are a hands-on musical experience whether they've a love for music already or just keen to play around.
Louis Pearl, the Amazing Bubble Man, does a fantastically entertaining and educational show combinging science, art and magic through bubbles. It's a the Assembly George Square Gardens at various points throughout August. Kids adore it, every time.
DANCE PERFORMANCES AT DANCE BASE
Dance Base runs energetic and fun dance performances that are perfect for families. You'll find traditional Scottish dances, contemporary dance and everything in between. Really fun, fast-paced shows to watch.
ECO-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES AT THE EDINBURGH BOTANICS
The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh hosts lots of eco-friendly activities and workshops that teach kids abort sustainability and the environment. It's a fun way for them to learn about nature through fun activities. And the gardens are free for entry so are also simply a great place to escape the crowds of the Festival and be in a calm, green space for a few hours.
