It started with the 'Scottish' tartan blanket I bought online for a friend, when I was living abroad. I later found out it had been made in China. Not the homegrown gift I'd planned. But there's so much imported tat out there being sold as 'Scottish gifts' online that it's hard to avoid - and so many of us are sick and tired of it.

After moving back to Scotland eight years ago I was struck by all the amazing Scottish makers producing top quality things. Not the usual cliches, but beautiful, well-crafted gifts.

But if you're busy and don't have time to get out to independent shops and markets, these artisanal brands can be hard to find. So many shoppers and makers expressed a need for these things to be more visible.

An artisanal one-stop-shop

What if there was a one-stop-shop where you could discover, browse and buy from Scottish makers, all in a few minutes on your phone?

So in 2023 I set up Made Scotland. It's a marketplace where you can buy everything from venison charcuterie to handcrafted jewellery.

Running the website combines three things so many of us love: exploring Scotland, discovering beautiful, sustainably-made things and discovering people's colourful stories. As a writer who’d worked in women’s magazines for years, it's a natural fit.
