Jack Vettriano - Who Was This Famous Scottish Painter?

Jack Vettriano, one of Scotland’s most famous and perhaps most controversial artists, has died. He was a self-taught painter who rose from humble beginnings to global fame. Vettriano's work is known for blending classic and modern elements. His paintings sparked both admiration and debate for decades.

I remember the first time I saw his art. It reminded me of the romance in Edward Hopper’s paintings, but with a more familiar, Scottish touch. The windswept beaches, hidden glances, and charged atmosphere felt unique when shown alongside other Scottish art. It was exciting and fresh.

Rags to Riches Scottish Artist

Vettriano’s rise to fame is a true rags-to-riches story. Born in Fife, he left school at 15 to become a mining engineer but took up painting after a girlfriend gave him a box of watercolours for his 21st birthday. He didn't start to paint professionally until he was 40.

Despite his success, he faced criticism from the Edinburgh art establishment. Many saw his work as commercial and not 'serious' art. Some in the art world called it 'painting by numbers' but others put this down to art establishment snobbery.

His paintings were vibrant, exciting, and best of all, accessible. It was a style that lent itself to a million reproductions, on prints, stationery, ceramics you name it., Vettriano's art was populist and alive. His most famous works include the 1992 work The Singing Butler. His art has been bought by Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Robbie Coltrane, among others.

Vettriano’s impact on the world of Scottish art is undeniable. While some critics dismissed him, he had a loyal and global following and many simply loved his art.
